Joseph Jomo Pierre on Shakespeare's Nigga

When J. Kelly Nestruck of the Globe and Mail asked Joseph Jomo Pierre, author of Shakespeare’s Nigga why he felt the impulse to talk back to Othello in his play, he explained it like this:

For myself, it’s that, beneath it all, I am a person of colour in this art world. In some ways, you feel like you are Shakespeare’s nigga. I think Othello speaks to us who feel like we’re on the sidelines. We’re the spear carriers and we don’t want to be the spear carriers.”

Shakespeare’s Nigga is now available from bookstores and in our online store.
